Stalker's Luck by Chris Strange7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In much of the UK, the black of a cat is a lucky color. They bless marriagesĮnglish superstition says that giving a bride a black cat on her wedding day will bring her good luck in her marriage. So are black cats good luck? Let’s look at these good black cat luck superstitions around the world: Black cats are known to bless marriages. I think Tiptoe just likes that her bed is nearest the coveted space heater in the winter. My Chinese mother, the Feng Shui master, specifically put her black cat’s bed on the north side of her home to ward off evil. ![]() In fact, black cats are generally seen as good luck in Japan and much of Asia. ![]() Unlike much of the western world, Japanese culture sees a black cat crossing your path as a good omen. Most understood my American friend’s reaction - “Did you feel jinxed for your test?” some people asked - but I preferred my Japanese friend’s response: “But that’s good!” Black cats are lucky in a lot of cultures. “Oh!” said my Japanese friend - with a smile. ![]()

Thankam mathews7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() Once I am approaching sentience, I make a perfect fried egg: sunny-side up, crispy lacy edges, and always with a lashing of black pepper. My parents got a fat bag of it as a gift once, but they are committed to old man Lipton, so they gave it to me. The tea is Vahdam, loose-leaf, and it’s good. I make a mug of Darjeeling tea and wait for my eyes to uncross themselves. Our friends at the Cut say, “You’ll fall most in love with its wickedly sharp narrator, who’s funny, passionate, and complicated.” You might say the same about Mathews, who is also the founder of the mutual aid group Bed-Stuy Strong, and who spent this “personally apocalyptic week” meditating on friendship and illness, as well as considering the joy of giving someone their very first oyster. ![]() ![]() It follows Sneha, a young Indian immigrant building her life in Milwaukee, as she starts a soul-crushing corporate job while navigating friendship and dating - before things devolve into chaos. Queen Isabella by Alison Weir7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Her narrative begins with the formidable Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose marriage to Henry II establishes a dynasty which rules for over three hundred years and creates the most powerful empire in western Christendom – but also sows the seeds for some of the most destructive family conflicts in history and for the collapse, under her son King John, of England’s power in Europe. ![]() We see events such as the murder of Becket, Magna Carta and the birth of parliaments from a new perspective. Crusading queens, queens in rebellion against their king, queen seductresses, learned queens, queens in battle, queens who enlivened England with the romantic culture of southern Europe – these determined women often broke through medieval constraints to exercise power and influence, for good and sometimes for ill.Īlison Weir’s ground-breaking history of the queens of medieval England now moves into a period of even higher drama, from 1154 to 1291: years of chivalry, dynastic ambition, conflict with the church, baronial wars, and the all-pervading bonds of feudalism. ![]() The Plantagenet queens of England played a role in some of the most dramatic events in our history. ![]()

Laurell hamilton guilty pleasures7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() The Anita Blake series probably didn’t need another book review done for it. They did more good for authors than we realized, she said. Near the end, Laurell made a plea in one of her panels for all of us to write reviews of every book we read. I came away from that con feeling energized and happy that I’d gone. In the main, I was very impressed by both of them. Course, I’m no slouch in that department. Laurell was calm and collected, had load of insightful comments, and was way shorter than I thought she’d be. Jim was hilarious and engaging, with a head of long blue hair, and was so much more of a nerd (to my delight) than I figured he’d be. ![]() The guests of honor were Jim Butcher and Laurell K. A few months ago I hit up a small fantasy and science fiction convention just north of me. ![]()

Cake j bengtsson7/3/2023 ![]() ![]() I wanted a couple who would fight every step of the way for their relationship. Rock star romance perfection Melanie: One of the best book series I have read in a long time. I wanted to show a couple that was strong in their commitment to one another, a couple who would not be brought apart by misunderstandings or outside forces. Bengtsson and loving it The audio is really good too so I’m going back and forth but prefer to read it. Romance is wonderful and exciting and intense (and in full display in Cake), but it’s love that sustains a relationship. When I wrote, Cake, I didn’t set out to create a romance novel as much as to create a sweeping love story. At a wedding, a vibrant young woman takes him by complete surprise and turns his colorless world upside down. The first book, Cake: A Love Story, focuses on Jake, a rock star with a painful past who, aside from his close-knit family, has sealed himself off from the rest of world. The Cake Series is a group of four interwoven books centered on the McKallister family who endure a tragic happening in the past. Suddenly, I had a brand new career and a very shocked family (They were told a few weeks later). Much to my utter surprise, Cake took off right out of the gate and within a month was on its way to becoming a bestselling novel. I added everything I'd ever wanted to read in a romance (love, humor, witty dialogue and tragedy) then quietly released the book without telling a soul (not even my family). ![]() After reading a bad romance, I was convinced I could do a better job and sat down to write a story of my own. ![]() ![]() I'm a fairly new author (two years) and stumbled upon this new path in life in the strangest of ways. Davis, author of From the Dark Tower: Afro-American Writers, 1900 –1960, suggested that Larsen was “the most elusive ” of Harlem Renaissance writers. Very little is known about Larsen ’s early life. One need also consider Larsen ’s own withdrawal from New York City ’s literary and social life in the late 1930s. ” Still, that Larsen passed into literary obscurity after earning a reputation as one of the most promising writers of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance should not be particularly surprising given the fate of other black American women writers.
